A woman was dismissed from her job upon returning from the hospital by the company that caused her to be hospitalized in the first place.
The woman was one of seven employees at a company in the Sichuan city of Chengdu who was recently forced to eat extremely spicy snacks for failing to meet their quotas. The snacks have the name “Deathly Spicy Sticks” (死神辣条) and are marketed in bags emblazoned with a skull and crossbones.
Two of the workers were sent to the hospital afterward. The woman said that she was in pain to the point that she fainted and had to be carried out of the office and noted that she had just started her period. Doctors diagnosed her with cramps and acute gastroenteritis.
The company refused to formally compensate the woman for her pain and suffering, only offering to reimburse her medical expenses.
When she did return back to work, she was informed that she had been dismissed. As an explanation, the company declared that the woman did not “conform to their corporate culture.”
